Why Does Health Start From Proper Digestion?

Our GI tract is involved in very complex and important functions beyond simple digestion of our meals. When our digestive tract becomes faulty, overburdened or mistreated from various reasons, many disorders can arise.

As we age (40 and older) our stomach begins to produce less HCl which is needed to help breakdown and digest proteins and initiate digestion. This is a very critical part of digestion.

With a poor diet, our digestive tract has less available enzymes (from being overworked and with age) to successfully breakdown food. Also, with less consumption of  fruits and vegetables that contain natural digestive enzymes, we contribute to further faulty digestion.

If we ingest too many starchy carbohydrates, processed foods, stimulants including coffee, sugar/artificial sweeteners, alcohol, medications, antibiotics and not enough fiber-rich, natural and wholesome foods throughout our lifetime our digestion begins to suffer leading to potential autoimmune disorders, hormonal imbalances, mental illness and more…

Some symptoms that can arise from initial poor digestion can consist of the following (although there are plenty more):

  • Brain fog
  • Fatigue
  • Heavy feeling after eating/ tired after eating
  • Irregular bowels (constipation, diarrhea)
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Excessive gas and/or belching
  • Bloating
  • Cravings
  • Yeast infections
  • Mid-Day fatigue or experiencing lull’s throughout the day
  • Insulin resistance and dysglycemia (blood sugar imbalance)
  • Nutritional deficiencies evident via lab work
  • Acne
  • Brittle hair, soft nails

If we ignore common symptoms and fail to address faulty digestion, more serious health issues can begin to develop such as:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis/Osteoarthritis; Chronic inflammation
  • Thyroid disorders, Hypothyroidism; Hashimoto’s and Grave’s disease
  • IBD/IBS; Colitis
  • Leaky Gut Syndrome
  • Endometriosis/PCOS
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Allergies
  • Candida
  • Frequent illness/sickness
  • Bladder Infections
  • Psoriasis
  • Weakened immunity; failure to fight back
  • …and more

When I work with clients, we spend time first developing proper digestion and eliminating potential offenders. Why?

I like the analogy of riding a bike. If we have a wound (symptoms, disease) from falling off the bike (life), we must take care of the wound and help it heal before we go full speed again. This starts with slowing down and returning to the basics.

How You Can Start Improving Your Digestion:

  1. Eat smaller more frequent meals to take stress off of your digestive system.
  2. Start your day with consuming water before anything else! Minimum of 8-oz.
  3. Drink only sips of room temperature water during meals.
  4. Use digestive enzymes or digestive aids if applicable to your health needs.
  5. Ensure adequate amounts of both soluble and insoluble fiber.
  6. Always reach for fibrous vegetables, fresh fruits and lean proteins.
  7. Remove potential offenders.
  8. Ensure adequate amounts of Omega-3’s in your diet
  9. Address the underlying cause. If you’re unsure, please email me: info@christinaemilywellness.com
