Irregular Bowels: What You Can Do About It

Do you experience irregular bowels? Whether chronic (re-occurring long-term) or “here and there,” irregular bowels is a clear and effective means of communication.

*Irregular bowels includes constipation, diarrhea or a combination.

Putting various disorders aside, including IBS/IBD sufferers, let’s chat about what you can do to help improve this issue. First, it is important to note what the underlying cause can be.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. If traveling, are you quite thrown off of your typical eating patterns? Is the water quite different/are you somewhere exotic?
  2. Are you eating adequate amounts of natural, wholesome foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds?
  3. Do you drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages that may cause looser bowels?
  4. Do you have any known triggers? Food intolerance’s? Allergies? Have you considered this as an acute cause before?
  5. Are you stressed? Anxious? The gut-brain connection is closely connected and more apparent research is being pronounced.
  6. Are you over the age of 40?

Here are some solutions that can help overcome irregular bowels:

  1. Increase intake of filtered water.
  2. Follow proper digestive techniques during meal time (see previous posts or purchase my Digestive Health Guide).
  3. Increase intake of both types of fiber: insoluble and soluble. Fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds (the latter are also rich in essential fatty acids to help with lubrication and cellular activity).
  4. Get daily movement to help stimulate peristalsis (intestinal movement). Most of my clients with sedentary jobs and irregular eating patterns often note poor bowels.
  5. Remove potential triggers. Such as: decrease or eliminate consumption of stimulants, including that of coffee.
  6. If traveling, pack your own snacks that are high in fiber and nutritional value.
